The G-Shock square wasn't a styling choice — inventor Kikuo Ibe built the original DW-5000C around it in 1983 because a compact, symmetrical case resisted shock better than anything else he tried, and the slimmer DW-5600 that followed a few years later kept the same formula. Decades and hundreds of G-Shock models later, Ibe has said the 5600 line is still the one he reaches for personally, and Casio built its NIGO x K.IBE 35th Anniversary collaboration around the DW-5600 as the base model for exactly that reason.
This DW-5600E-1 is the no-frills black version of that original square — resin case, EL backlight, and 200-meter water resistance, without the collaboration branding or collector pricing that comes with the limited editions.
