Seiko's 62MAS gets most of the credit for starting Japan's dive-watch tradition in 1965, but Citizen actually got there first — the Parawater, released in 1959 and rated to 50 meters, is regarded as the first water-resistant Japanese watch, six years ahead of Seiko's celebrated diver. Citizen kept building on that head start, launching its dedicated PROMASTER diving line in 1989 and eventually earning ISO 6425 certification for professional-grade dive watches.
