Photographers have called Canon's 50mm f/1.8 the "Nifty Fifty" for years, and the nickname has stuck through multiple versions of the lens because it keeps doing the same trick: prime-lens sharpness and background blur at a fraction of what other fast primes cost, even with a mostly plastic build.
This STM version updated the classic with a stepping-motor autofocus system for smoother, quieter focusing than the older screw-driven design, while keeping the same f/1.8 maximum aperture and EF-mount compatibility across Canon's DSLR lineup.
