The second-generation "G2" version redesigns the optical formula to 17 elements in 15 groups, adds a glossier, more scratch-resistant finish, and tightens up the zoom ring's feel — genuine upgrades over the original A036 version rather than a cosmetic refresh.
What hasn't changed is the price gap with Sony's own equivalent. Sony's 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is sharper at the edges and slightly lighter, but it costs roughly double — and independent testing has put the Tamron ahead optically in several respects despite the price difference.
