An 85mm portrait lens is supposed to deliver creamy, subject-isolating bokeh, and Sony's flagship version of that focal length — the FE 85mm F1.4 G Master — does it at a flagship price. The F1.8 version released in 2017 was built as the answer to that: one reviewer called it Sony's "affordable" 85mm, costing roughly a third of the G Master while staying smaller and better-balanced on compact bodies.
It keeps the formula simple: an f/1.8 maximum aperture on a mid-telephoto 85mm focal length, a 67mm filter thread, and autofocus fast enough for portrait and street work without the weight or price of the pro-grade glass above it.
