The standard 24-70mm zoom range has become something of a default for full-frame shooters, but Sony's FE 24-50mm F2.8 G asks whether that extra 20mm on the long end is worth the size and weight it costs. At 440 grams, it undercuts Sony's own 24-70mm F2.8 GM II (695g) by well over a third, and comes in noticeably lighter than Sigma's competing 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art (830g) too.
The tradeoff is real — losing the 50-70mm range means reaching for a different lens for tighter portraits or compression-heavy shots — but the 24-50mm range still covers four of the most commonly used focal lengths (24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm) at a constant f/2.8. Sharp across the frame even wide open, with an optical design specifically tuned to avoid the field-of-view shift that plagues some zooms during video focus pulls, it's built for shooters who'd rather carry less than have everything.
