Full-frame L-mount lenses tend to be built for Panasonic's professional S1-series bodies, which means substantial glass and substantial size. The LUMIX S 40mm F2 breaks that pattern almost by accident: at 144 grams and just under 41mm long, it's small enough that reviewers testing it assumed, before checking the spec sheet, that it must be a Micro Four Thirds lens rather than full-frame glass.
It isn't just small for the sake of it — the lens carries dust and splash resistance with a fluorine coating on the front element, and delivers background separation reviewers called better than its size would suggest. The tradeoff is a stepping-motor autofocus system that can struggle with fast-moving or distant subjects, but for street photography and environmental portraits, it turns Panasonic's full-frame system into something that can travel in a jacket pocket.
