The original Olympus 17mm F1.8, a 34mm-equivalent standard prime, built a following partly on a small mechanical detail: a pull-back manual focus ring with a distance scale, letting shooters snap into manual focus by feel. When OM System (the post-Olympus brand) updated the lens in 2025, it rebuilt the barrel in metal, added five internal seals for genuine dust and splash resistance, and included the lens hood in the box by default — real, functional upgrades.
What didn't survive the redesign was that manual focus clutch, replaced with a conventional focus ring. The optical formula inside is unchanged from the original, so image quality is identical — this update is entirely about durability and build, not sharpness. At 112 grams, it's still one of the lightest standard primes available for Micro Four Thirds, just with a different set of tradeoffs than the lens it replaced.
